Spring/Summer 22/23

Spring Fashion

by Shane Staker

— As Spring is trying to fight off the intense Winter we have had here, it gives us some hope of sunshine and warmer days ahead. Personally, I cannot wait for the summer fun.

Over the past months we have been hibernating or if we have had to brave the cold, it has been with layers upon layers of clothing. Gentleman, we can now start to lose the overcoats, gloves, and scarfs and get ready for some much-needed vitamin D.

Something I get asked a lot at the change of a season, but especially from Winter to Spring/Summer is, “What should I wear?” or “What is in fashion right now?”

To make things as easy as possible, I have listed our staple garments separately below and given a rundown of each of them.

The Spring/Summer season of 2022-23 is all about colour and comfort. Over the last couple of years, we have loved our neutral, earthy tones this time of year’ now whilst there can always be room for them, gentleman, let us up the ante and wear some colour!

01.

— SUITS

There is two parts to this; we have our everyday and then events. For everyday wear look at some bolder patterns for colour such as brown with a burnt orange overcheck. If that seems a little bold for you, you opt for a classic navy with an ultra-blue check.

If you are getting event ready you can be as extreme as you please. There are some stunning pastel fabrics coming through that make you stand out in the crowd. I fully support this!

02.

— JACKETS

This is where you can have come fun and be adventurous! No matter the event, there is always room for a jacket over a pair of jeans, chinos or shorts. With a jacket you are only limited by your own imagination.

Personally, I opt for bright and patterned during the day and then a nice colour with some texture for an evening look.

  • Linen

FIT

As we said earlier this coming season is about comfort. That does not mean we can wear oversized suits that don’t fit us. What this does mean is that we can look at some lighter constructions.

Try a soft shoulder and a half-lined jacket. You will instantly notice the weight difference of it, and you will feel the breeze right through it.

03.

— SHORTS

This upcoming season I am very much looking forward to getting some sun on my legs, as should you be. (I hope you did not skip leg day this Winter!)

Keeping with the theme of colour, pastel will be everywhere this year. If this does not sound like you, you can stick with some neutral tones but try adding some colour where you can.

Chino shorts have been on trend for a few years now and they will continue but there are always other options. If you are around the pool with friends and keeping it casual, you can opt for a nice pair of swim shorts. On the other hand, if you need to dress things up try changing into a pair of linen shorts. They look fantastic and wear well.

Textiles

  • Cotton
  • Linen
  • Synthetic/Mesh

FIT

Gentleman, you will love having more of a comfort fit with your shorts this season. The length can be varied and a little longer but please do not go past the top of your knee. Whilst keeping with a nice silhouette you can ease off skintight shorts and give the crown jewels some room to breathe.

04.

— PANTS

Wearing pants in summer can be a hard one for a simple fact, it is hot! You may have to wear them for work, or you have a function that requires you to wear pants.

If it is for work or a function, you can get some super light and airy wool fabrics perfect for summer suiting. These make some great suits and are noticeably more breathable.

If either of the above are not for you, then the best answer I can give you is, LINEN! Linen pants are the most comfortable pants you will wear this summer. They are light, airy and look fantastic.

Picture this; you have been around the pool or down at the beach all day because it has been 33 degrees, then you realise you have a dinner reservation. You are feeling hot and bothered but know you need to put on pants and at least a polo. When you change into you linen pants you will be thankful you read this article and got yourself a pair.

Linen comes in a range of styles but generally are a bit more conservative on the colour, so if neutral suits you best then linen will again be your answer.

Chinos (cotton pants) have been at the height of menswear for years now and that trend will continue because they are so versatile, being able to be dressed up and down. They always come in a range of colours so you can be creative with them.

FIT

We are finally starting to move away from skintight pants, and I am thrilled about it. Our pant fit this season will be a little wider and looser than we have seen, giving a more natural look to the shape of our legs. Along with some more mobility, a looser fit will allow for more airflow creating cooler temperatures.

If you are anything like me and like to get your ankles out in Summer, you will be happy that cropped pants are still here to stay this season.

My only tip is making sure you are wearing the right footwear with cropped pants.

05.

— SHIRTS

This is the part I am the most excited for! By now you that colour is the trend this season and there is no better way to express yourself than with a shirt over a nice pair of pants or shorts. A good shirt is a staple piece for any man’s wardrobe. One of the most exciting things to come back this season is silk. Yes silk!

This season we are set to see some silk shirts getting around in the sun and there are some exciting fabrics coming out in Europe with some great patterns and colours.

We have all dreamed of being on a beach on a warm night with a cocktail in hand and our silk shirt blowing in the breeze…Well now it can happen.

Textiles

  • Cotton
  • Linen
  • Silk

FIT

A nice, fitted shirt will always accentuate your body so it is important to get it right. This season we can keep things more flowy especially if the shirt is made to be untucked but keep it in check. If you are wearing it tucked in, then it needs to be nicely fitted but not too tight.
